The key weakness in the PD valve train are the individual valve lobes of the camshaft. The cam lobes drive conventional flat top lifters, this alone generates severe sliding and extreme hertzian forces on the lobe faces due to the cam profile required of the diesel engine. Diesels utilize a very high lift short duration cam lobe which increases the rate that the valves open and close. These acceleration forces directly impart greater force at the sliding faces of the valve train.
The PD due to the “Third” lobe located between each valve lobe (Intake and Exhaust) required the valve lobes to be narrowed by about 20% when compared to the older VE TDI without the PD injection system. By narrowing the valve lobes, the total force imparted on the valves lifters went up due to the smaller contact area on the lifter face, this significantly raised the local forces on the lifter thus requiring far greater reliance on lubricants with very high shear strength and increased viscosity reliance across the engines operating temperature range.
In order to withstand these forces, VW had to use a hardened steel camshaft which is significantly different than other iron camshafts found in other applications. Despite the higher quality steel camshaft, the lubricant still provides the protection from the contact forces generated between the valve and the lifter, hence the lubricant is the ONLY thing that determines the durability of the camshaft in these applications.
WARRANTY: 3 year, 300,000 mile warranty (when purchased with our installation kit)
– Aftermarket kits have a 1 year 15,000 mile warranty.
NOTE!! This is not a “regrind” from a used OEM or soft, cast iron, aftermarket cam! These are NEW Induction hardened camshafts hardened to a depth of several times that found in the OEM cams for unrivaled wear resistance. Optimized cam lobe geometry reduces valve train stresses associated with the OEM cam lobe profiles which lead to premature wear in the Pumpe Duse (PD) engines.
$699.00 – Colt Cam (Stock profile Colt cam, New (not a regrind) Steel / Hardened)
$498.24 – (set of 8) Lifters (OEM, Black Nitrided, pre-lubed)
$180.00 – (set of 10 GLB/Yellow) Cam Bearings $ 74.00 – (set of 8) PD rocker shaft (TTY) bolts $ 67.20- (set of 10) Cam Journal Cap Bolts $ 11.80 – (1) PTFE Cam seal $15.60 – (1) Tandem Pump Gasket $ 8.00 – (1) 4oz Bottle Assembly Pre-Lube
$1,553.84 – Value of entire cam kit (see Below for current complete kit pricing when purchased as a complete package) You can find cheaper kits using Chinese parts or you can buy once and never have to perform this repair again!
Using ANY oil with a 5w30 viscosity rating IMMEDIATELY voids all warranties!
Our preferred oil to be used is Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40 (or Delvac 1 5w40) which is easily attained at auto-parts stores. We also highly suggest running your engine oil not less than 10,000 miles between oil changes. Contrary to popular belief, More frequent changes can cause detergent interference with the wear additives present in the oil resulting in higher wear rates in
the valve train. The lowest wear rates occur with 10,000-15,000 mile oil change intervals or 2 years whichever occurs first for PD engines.
We fully support and STRONGLY urge the use of the following oils:
Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w40
Mobil DELVAC 1 5w40 (NOT 15w40)
Caterpiller DEO 5w40 (re-packaged Delvac 1 5w40 with a Boron tracer)
Mobil 1 5w40 ESP Formula M (Low SAPS Mercedes version)
If you elect not to use our suggested oils we must warn you to adhere ONLY to the following:
WARNING: USING ANY OTHER OIL THAT DOES NOT HAVE THE VW 505.01 SPECIFICATION VOIDS ALL WARRANTIES AND WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE AND IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE TO YOUR CAMSHAFT WHICH CAN CAUSE SUDDEN ENGINE FAILURE AND POSSIBLE DEATH OR INJURY – THIS IS NOT TO BE TAKEN LIGHTLY!
NOTE: Amsoil oils DO NOT meet any VW specification and the use of Amsoil oils voids our warranty, thus damage will have to covered by Amsoil in those cases where damage or wear to the valve train occurs…
